What is the cause of Gray Hair? Does Genetics Play a Major Role?

Nov 15, 2022 by Adhip

Have you ever seen someone try to dye their hair from gray to black? Your granddad may have dyed his hair in the past to match his appearance in old photographs. Getting gray, silver or white hair is a natural part of aging, and what cause the gray hair?

Most individuals start to go grey in their mid-40s – this is completely unrelated to their stress levels. Hair doesn’t actually ‘turn’ grey, it just starts to scatter throughout the hair strand and become more visible.

The Natural Colour

All hair begins at the hair follicle, which is a tube of tissue under the skin that surrounds each strand of hair. Each follicle contains pigment cells that determine the natural color of your hair.

Melanin, a chemical made by the pigment cells of your hair, gives you your natural hair color. Some people have lighter hair and darker skin (like me!), and others have darker skin and lighter hair. So,the color the hair appears to be, dark or light, depends on how much melanin each hair has.

Hair color is set in your 20s. Once you’re hitting 30, the chance of turning blonde spikes up to 1 in 4, but once brown hair is set it will not change color,”

Root cause of gray hair

As we grow older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. Also, as human hair gets older, the number of pigment cells per hair follicle will decrease. The color will become more transparent, such as gray, silver, or white. With age, fewer pigment cells are produced to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will turn gray entirely.

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that genetics may play a role in the age at which puberty begins which is the main cause of gray hair. Some people may be gray by the time they are 30 years old, whereas others might not see their first gray hair until around 40.

Though many people believe that a traumatic event can instantly shock someone’s hair white or gray, scientists do not support this hypothesis.

Other Causes of Gray hair

The majority of people with gray hair have white hair due to aging. Interestingly, in some cases, the person’s hair may be graying due to a medical problem. For example:

  • vitamin B12 deficiency
  • tuberous sclerosis
  • thyroid disease
  • alopecia areata
  • vitiligo is a condition that causes cells at the base of hair follicles that produce color to cease or diminished in function.
  • Neurofibromatosis (known as Von Recklinghausen’s disease) is a group of inherited diseases that causes tumors, along with abnormal development of the bones and skin. This can have a significant impact on the day-to-day life of sufferers.

Conclusion

We found out the cause of hair to turn gray for many reasons; the common ones being when and how often you lose it. It’s hard to say exactly what causes people to go gray. However, it would be more valuable to look at the past generations in your family. That is true no matter the level of stress that you may have at the workplace. For example, even if you are the President of the United States, there will be some form of stress and pressure that comes with your job.
